Brand History
In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb founded ORTLIEB in Nuremberg, Germany. The first ORTLIEB bicycle panniers were created to meet a purely personal need for waterproof gear—it wasn't available at the time! The first products were handmade on Hartmut's mother's sewing machine: dry bags and bicycle panniers made from truck tarpaulins. These prototypes were tested by Hartmut and his friends on self-organized cycling and climbing trips. What started so simply quickly turned into a success story. Meanwhile, the company has grown to over 230 employees, and the ORTLIEB collection has expanded to more than 500 individual products. Even today, everything is housed under one roof: from development and design to engineering, production, sales, marketing, and shipping. All waterproof products are manufactured using high-frequency welding methods at the German headquarters in Heilsbronn. The "Made in Germany" label guarantees high-quality outdoor equipment for all requirements, in all weather conditions, and on all terrains.
